SGD - Sulukule Gönüllüleri Derneği

Improving school attendance of disadvantaged children

SGD was established by volunteers in Sulukule, Istanbul, home to lower income and disadvantaged residents including Roma, internal migrants and refugees. The city was an enormous demolition site for many years due to an urban renewal project, forcing inhabitants out of their homes.

SGD focuses on minimising school drop-out rates of children in the community aged six to 18 years, working with both the children and their families and educators. It conducts weekly workshops in schools on social-emotional learning and body movements throughout the school year. The organisation also provides free school meals to disadvantaged children through maintenance grants. SGD works with teachers on child safety and protection to strengthen the children's bond of commitment and attachment to their schools. It offers tutoring and social development workshops for adolescents and conducts literacy, human rights and family life workshops for women.

With the support of STDV, Dalyan funds these workshops as well as field research in six schools that aims at identifying reasons for school dropouts, the needs of its beneficiaries and effectiveness of its approaches.
